WHAT PEOPLE SAY

— Erin M.

"I would highly recommend Lauren as a flute tutor! She is patient and kind. She worked with my daughter at her pace, while also encouraging her to play more difficult pieces. My daughter looked forward to her lessons every week and played so much more confidently since starting. Lauren is very talented and knowledgable. She always communicated clearly with my daughter and with me."

Why should you take lessons with Lauren?

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that every person is designed for a purpose. We have a path that we are made to discover, and there is an intersection where our gifts and talents meet our passions. That is what teaching is for me. I love music, and I love to play the flute. Therefore, that moves me to share that knowledge with others. It motivates me to help others to reach their goals and to help them find their purpose as well.

Growing up, I was very fortunate to have people who dedicated their time to helping me grow as a person. One of those people was my private lessons teacher. Not only did she provide me with excellent instruction on the flute, but she encouraged me to go after my dreams, cheered me on in my athletic and academic accomplishments, and was like a second mom. I believe students learn and grow the most when they are in a positive and nurturing environment. Therefore, I work hard to develop a learning plan customized for each student, with the right balance of challenge and encouragement

I believe that flute lessons should develop each student as a total musician. In addition to the essential fundamentals of flute playing, I also emphasize chamber music participation (playing music with friends), music theory (the building blocks of music), and music appreciation. Students will be encouraged to audition for outside groups and ensembles, as well as prepare repertoire for solo and ensemble competitions and recitals. Don’t worry; if you don’t want to participate in those extra things, you don’t have to!

Students will perform in two studio recitals a year to showcase their talents and gain performance experience. Students will also get to collaborate with music students at the University of the Cumberlands in the UC Flute Ensemble Pops Concert (learn alto and bass flute!). The ensemble also performs a Holiday concert at a local nursing home (studio holiday sweater contest)!

In my private flute studio, the expectation is that there are no limitations! I want each of my students to soar above and beyond the “normal” expectations, and perform at the highest level of musicianship possible. I believe this leads to a more satisfying and fruitful musical journey.

As a teacher, I want to be in my student’s corner, and one of their biggest cheerleaders. Being a teacher of music means educating the student beyond just how to be a good flute player. It means encouraging students to meet goals in everything that they do, as well as helping them develop interpersonal skills, work ethic, and confidence that will help them shine in every area of life.
